How can I stop algae coming out of my Filter System in my aquarium?

I have a 10 gal aquarium and I have algae float out of my filter system. Do I need a new filter system altogether?

That’s actually a pretty common problem. Algae grows on nutrients in the water and with all that water flowing through your filter it’s only natural algae would grow there. Even a very well tended aquarium can get some algae in the filter, but do be sure to do your weekly water changes and clean the gravel, that will help reduce the amount that grows in the filter. Wash out the filter from time to time as well, usually when you do your water change. Just rinse it a bit and wipe off the excess algae. A little growing in there isn’t a bad thing, it’s in the filter instead of in the tank where it will show. The best way to keep it to a reasonable amount that won’t brake off and float into the tank is through changing a bit more water when you do your water changes though. This will reduce the amount of nutrients in the water and therefore reduce the algae.
