Can I put a goldfish in my 20g freshwater aquarium?
I have a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium currently holding:
1 dojo loach
3 small tetras
1 angelfish
1 gourmie
1 tiger barb
Can I put in two clown loaches and, more importantly, a goldfish? Will the goldfish contaminate my tank? I tested the ammonia level just today and it is at zero (normal). Would I be endangering my current fish with this new addition?
No, everything you listed is a Tropical Fish, requiring warm water, goldfish need and prefer cooler waters. Water that is too warm will speed up their metabolism and can lead to stomach and other health issues.
A 20 is simply not enough space for him including the other fish either. The goldfish will produce so much waste that it’ll become a danger to the others (perhaps not when a baby but definitely as he grows).
The goldfish will be a danger to the tetra (depending on the type, any slim bodied fish is likely to be eaten by the goldie) and in danger from the angelfish and barbs. The goldie won’t be able to get away fast enough and will be harassed by these more aggressive and fin nipping fish.
Better to keep tropicals with tropicals.
No clowns either, they are peacful little guys in shops, but can quicklly become a foot long each. That’s going to over power your tank in no time.
